The first time we entered the house in Vicolo Francipane, we were amazed by the light that flooded all the rooms. It was a warm mid-April afternoon.
We made a thorough tour of the building and then hurried to see all the rooms.
All around us, many unequal sloping roofs.
Terraces and balconies with pots overflowing with colorful geraniums surrounded the building.
Slowly we turned our gaze from south to north and saw the domes of several churches, the façade of the city palace, a former Jesuit convent, and those of other old mansions.
For a moment we felt we were in Paris, then the sight of a slice of blue sea brought us back to Sicily.
All those roofs were not galvanized sheet metal like those in Paris, they were terracotta.
They were not blue, but the color of the earth.
They were not equal and cold like those in Paris.
Those terracotta roofs, to those who looked at them, told the history and art of the Mediterranean peoples.
